Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta
Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta is a hill. It is located in Gundlupet Taluk of Chamarajanagar District. It is at a height of 1450 Meters from sea level. This hill is covered by forest. It is a part of Bandipur National Park. Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta is the highest peak of Bandipur National Park. The hill is covered with dense fog round the year. Thus it gets the prefix Himavad. Himavad means fog in Kannada and Sanskrit. The hill has a temple of Lord Krishna. It is called Venugopalaswamy temple. It is in middle of the forest.
Access to Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta
It is 79km from Mysore and 220km from Bangalore. There is a motorable road to the top of the hill. There is a Forest department check post at the foot of the hill. Entry fee is collected by them. The entry fee, w.e.f February 1,2011 is Rs 25 for two wheelers, Rs 50 for four wheelers. The materials which are used for Puja are permitted to carry to the top of the hill. Other food items are not permitted to be carried. It is a plastic free zone. Visitors should report back to the entrance after 1 hour 30 minutes. Visiting time is from 8.30 am till 4pm. Overnight stay on the top is not allowed on the hill.
The deity of the temple is Lord Venugopala (Krishna). The temple was built by Hoysala King Ballala. It was built during 1315 AD. Later Wodeyars of Mysore showed interest in the temple. They improved the temple.
The Garbha Gudi of the temple, has an idol of Lord Krishna. He is holding a flute under a tree. He is flanked by his friends. The Garbha gudi features interesting stories of Krishnavatara.
The Gopalaswamy idol is flanked by Rukmini and Satyabhama.
The local legend (Sthala Purana) says that Sage Agasthya performed intence penance. Due to his penance Lord Vishnu blessed him. He promised to reside in Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta.

The best way to visit this place is in your own vehicle or a taxi. With a good car rental service you can plan to visit this place on your way to Ooty or Bandipur or Wayanad.
