Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna is a town in Mandya district of Karnataka. It is 15km from Mysore. It is also spelled Shrirangapatna; anglicized to Seringapatam during British Rule.  It has a great religious, cultural and historic importance.  It is an island as it is surrounded by river Kaveri.

History of Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna has been an urban center and a place of pilgrimage. It became the seat of a major viceroyalty during the period of Vijayanagara dynasty. The vassal states of the empire such as Mysore and Talakad were overseen from Srirangapatna.  In the 17th century, perceiving the decline of Vijayanagar empire, the rulers of Mysore ventured to assert independence. Their first target was Srirangapatna. Raja Wodeyar vanquished Rangaraya in 1610.  Rangaraya   was the Viceroy of Srirangapatna.  Navaratri Festival was celebrated in the year 1610.
