Chamundi Hills

Chamundi Hills is in Karnataka.The Chamundeshwari Temple is situated on the top of Chamundi hills. It is about 10 km from Mysore. The temple was named after Durga, the fierce form of Shakti.  Goddess Chamundeshwari is held in reverence for centuries by the Wodeyars of Mysore kingom.

The original temple was built by Hoysala kings in the 12th century.  Later the tower of the temple was built by Vijayanagara kings in the 17th century. A flight of one thousand steps was built to the top of the hill from the bottom in the year 1659. There is a huge Nandi at 800th step. Nandi is the bull mount of Shiva. It has the dimension of 24feet length and 15feet hight. It has delicately carved  bells around its neck.

Chamundeshwari temple has a seven storey tall Gopura. It is decorated with fine carvings. The deity is said to be made of gold. The doors are made out of silver.

Chamundi hills is 1000 meters high from sea level. You need to drive just 10 kms from Mysore city to reach atop hill which  houses a beautiful temple of goddess Chamundi.

Goddess Chamundi killed the demon Mahishasura (A rakshas) in Mysore in a battle. Goddess Chamundi is worshiped by all Mysorians. A huge statue of demon Mahishasura is at the beginning of temple premices. People from various parts of the world visit Chamundi temple in huge numbers.

Chamundi hills also a home for some good wildlife but you may not sight any animals here.

You can also climb the hill using the steps and on the way you can see a big Nandi (Sacred Bull).
